About Us

The EARTH-Utah curriculum couples four focus areas with three modes of analysis.

The four EARTH-Utah focus areas are (1) Population, (2) Resources, (3) Sustainability, and (4) Personal Responsibility. Our lessons employ these focus areas to explore local environmental issues, most notably: population growth, air quality, water supply, wilderness, transportation, energy, agriculture, and community service.

The three EARTH-Utah modes of analysis are (1) Environmental Science, (2) Ecology, and (3) Social Sciences. The environmental science mode of analysis covers the details of what environmental issues Utah faces, how these issues have developed (physically, biologically, geographically) and what challenges they pose. The ecology mode of analysis focuses on ecosystem connectedness, employing comparison and analogy, interactive models, and role-playing. This provides a tangible framework for children to understand that environmental issues actually affect them, and to feel that they are an important part of an interconnected system. The social science mode of analysis considers why environmental issues develop (history, economics, etc.) and how they can be met, as a society and as an individual. Additionally, in order to encourage an experiential connectedness with the environment, several lessons are focused around field trips to different local ecosystems.
